Outdoor Studios

June 2023

So many times I’ve packed art supplies for a camping trip or hike and proceeded never to pull them. Lately though, I’ve successfully been painting outside more than ever.

Top reasons why I am lovin’ it lately:

  1. Environment: There are no walls or ceilings outdoors. I can feel the elements of sun on my skin, breezes passing by, hear numerous bird species, insects, and other sounds off in the distance. I can look past my arm out over great distances. Critters sometimes land or crawl across the paper and supplies. A reminder I am not alone. A studio is safe place to make, but I need to take it outside for different perspectives.

  2. Air: Yes, air is part of the environment, but the movement of air around me clears my energy field, as well as, activates it. Whichever way the wind blows— it is fresher than studio air, brings me joy, and moves my soul. Wind can also blow the paper and supplies around which keeps me on my toes. A reminder to go with the flow (air flow).

  3. 365 degrees of natural inspiration, ‘nough said. The experience merely ignites more ideas. Since I am working on a couple new series, this is a great opportunity to see new textures, compositions, and forms.

  4. Out of the studio, out of my comfort zone. I like to take an art supply or different brush that I don’t usually use in the studio. This encourages me to keep the creativity fresh, experiment, and continue to evolve my art and practice.
